Equilibrium Horse Massage Mitt

The Equilibrium Massage Mitt offers effective, affordable, and easy-to-use massage for horses.

Using the Massage Mitt.

The Massage Mitt has three different settings, which can be selected easily from the mitt control panel. You can select the intensity of the program to suit your horse's needs. Each program has three different types of massage: pulsing, vibration, and stroking. This ensures the muscles are worked in different ways. Each session lasts 10 minutes which allows enough time for full coverage over the horses’ muscle groups.

The Massage Mitt can be easily incorporated into your warming up and cooling down routine.

The low setting can then be used as part of a gentle cool down.
The medium setting can be used to help warm muscles up prior to exercise or on a day off.
The high setting can be used for those horses that prefer a more intense massage.

It comes in a handy carry bag which makes it ideal for use at home, away, or in the lorry. It wipes clean, making it easy to care for. The bag also has useful storage spots for the battery and charger.

The Massage Mitt is the choice of many Olympians, World Champions, top producers, up and coming stars, and amateurs. It can be used on its own or in conjunction with the Massage Pad and Magnetic Back Pad and Magnetic Chaps.

Massage for horses.

As found with our Equilibrium Massage Pad, there are a number of benefits of massage.

Massage is well known for its ‘feel good’ factor and our Massage Pad has been shown to aid relaxation, and assist with the maintenance of healthy muscle and muscle function. Tension is often one of the most common reasons for poor performance. By increasing relaxation and improving back flexibility, the negative effects of tension can be reduced. A relaxed horse, with relaxed muscles, will move with fluidity and suppleness which is particularly important for competition horses performing dressage movements, and those jumping technical fences.

How to use

The Equilibrium Massage Mitt can be used in a variety of ways to help your horse.

General Massage/Warm Up

You can use the mitt as a general full-body warm-up for the horse or use it to target discipline, specific muscle groups.

As an all over massage:

Use the massage mitt in a slow sweeping motion overall muscle groups shown below running in the same direction as the hair. Spend 2 minutes on each muscle group, making sure that you repeat this on both sides of the horse.

Discipline-specific warm-up:

Different disciplines put a demand on different muscle groups depending on what is required of the horse. Spend longer on the areas that are specific to what you are about to do to help warm these muscles up for the work ahead. It can also help to increase flexibility and therefore range of movement. Suggested 4 minutes per targeted muscle group, again being sure to do the same on both sides of the horse.

Dressage

Lat/long Dorsi, Abdominals, splenius, rhomboid, superficial gluteal, tensor FL

Lateral movement – pectorals, gracilis

Show Jumping

Gluteal muscle group, biceps femoris, triceps. Back also important.

Cross Country

Targeted Areas

If you have had a musculoskeletal therapist (ie. Physiotherapist, chiropractor, massage therapist etc) treat your horse they may have identified areas where your horse would most benefit from some extra massage.

Using the mitt to target specific areas:

Use the mitt in a stroking motion over the general area for 1-2 minutes on a medium setting to warm up the area.

Next hold the mitt on the target area for at least 5 minutes (on medium, or high if required). If your horse is comfortable, start to apply some pressure through the mitt during this time. This can help to increase the vibrations the horse feels. Some horses will lean into the mitt which is a sure sign that you’ve hit the spot!

Then use a stroking motion again for a further 1-2minutes (on medium or low) to finish off the massage. Make sure plenty of fresh water is available as a good massage can make a horse thirsty.

Apply this method to each point. This is a really good method to use to warm up a targeted area prior to any prescribed stretches.

Using the Hotspot heat pad for horses

Getting Started

A full charge of the battery can take up to 12 hours. The charger indicator light with be red when charging. It will turn to green once the battery is fully charged.

Open the base of the Hotspot heat pad by using the red tabs. Plug the connector into the battery and then you’re ready to go!

The Hotspot will run approx. 10 x 10-minute heat and massage sessions from a fully charged battery (based on the high massage setting). To prolong the life of your battery, please disconnect when not in use.

Choosing your setting

To select the desired massage setting, press the relevant button once for low, twice for medium, and three times for high. Pressing it for a fourth time will turn the Hotspot heat pad off.

You can turn the heat on/off by simply pushing the button once.

LOW – this is best suited for a relaxing massage:

After exercise
On a day of rest
For a sensitive horse
When introducing the Hotspot for the first time.
MEDIUM – this is best suited for general maintenance and everyday use:

For a pre-exercise warm-up
General maintenance massage
HIGH – this is best suited:

For horses who prefer a more intense massage
Those with thicker coats
Horses who are a bit overweight

Using the Heat function

Using heat will draw more energy from the battery than massage. When your battery no longer has enough power to run heat, all icons on the control panel will flash and turn off. You will still be able to use massage for a while after this happens. To use heat again, please fully recharge your battery.

Benefits of Heat and Massasge

Our horses work hard for us with a lot of pressure being put onto their muscles through exercise.

Massage and heat are two simple ways in which we can help support healthy muscle function in our horse.

Massage
Performance depends on freedom of movement, full flexibility and an absence of musculoskeletal pain, all of which can be improved using massage (Gellman, 1998).

These factors also contribute towards keeping your horse comfortable and happy in general too!

Benefits of Massage Therapy include:

• Helps maintain healthy blood and lymph circulation

• Soothes tired muscles

• Supports recovery after exercise

• Promotes relaxation

Heat
Using heat is a great way to help sensitive horses who may find massage too much. Heat is non-invasive, gentle and well accepted with many associated benefits.

Research suggests that tissue temperature needs to increase by at least 3 to 5°C from the resting temperature (Bockstahler et al, 2004). However using something that is too hot could cause discomfort and even damage to the tissue.

Horse & Hound Reviews

“I have the mitt and my pony loves it, he will push himself into it when I use it on him and I can see from his face that he is relaxed. He particularly likes being massaged on his bottom and hind quarters.”

“I’ve got both. I got the pad and my pony absolutely loved it so I went mad and bought the mitt as well. It’s wonderful for doing his neck and hamstrings and as a bonus my dog loves it as well. I might even try it on my own aching muscles if I ever get the time.”

“you can really get into hamstrings and the like and also use it on yourself. I think they are a fabulous invention and a good price!”

“Got the pad and the mitt – best things I ever bought for my horses!”

“I love all the Equilibrium stuff, I have the pad, the mitt plus the magnetic pad, quarter pad and the magnetic leg wraps. I use them all the time I think they are brill.”

“I have the Equilibrium Massage Pad, and the Mitt. I find both are really good. I used to use them on my old racehorse, Bob, who would fall asleep with it on. He really loved it, and did him a power of good, as being an ex-racehorse he had a few problems with back and legs. And as he got older, it really helped in keeping him supple. I now use it on my other horse, Murphy, who also enjoys a good session with them. They vibrate, sometimes low and sometimes high. The pad runs for a 30 minute session, with variable settings, and the mitt runs for 10 minutes in a session, though obviously you can extend these times, or shorten them, whichever suits at the time. The battery life is pretty good too. I’m very pleased with mine. One of the best things I ever bought for my horses. Great for warming up, and for relaxing after, I found”.

Safety Instructions & FAQ

I’ve read the massage from a Massage Pad or Massage Mitt isn’t deep enough to affect the horse, is this true?

This is a comment we occasionally see on social media where individuals have misunderstood the purpose of our massage products. The Massage Pad and Massage Mitt were developed to provide a superficial (surface) massage to maintain the horses’ well being. This was proven in our tests by showing an increase in back flexibility and overall relaxation. The Massage Mitt was not developed to replace the manual techniques of a qualified physiotherapist or massage therapist. Only a trained professional should carry out a massage to your horse that is able to reach the deeper muscles.
